Family Fun and Music in Nash Vegas!

mark fp_250pxI spent this past weekend in Nashville with my cousin Sheri and her husband, Mark Stevens. We had a really great time. Every year, at least once a year, the three of us make our annual pilgrimage to Nashville for some great food and lots of great music.

This year was no exception. We had a great time!

One of the many things I love about Nashville is the music.

You can either stay downtown and just leave your hotel room and walk down music row, or you can catch a cab or shuttle and be there in just a few minutes.

Either way… you are not far at all from some great entertainment!

mark grissom, beaverdamusa.comI am a huge fan of “Rockabilly Guitar” music. I love the Brad Paisley style of guitar playing.

There is a lot of that in Nashville. You can start out at Tootsies and after a few songs; make your way over to The Double Fiddle. After you hear that band for a while, walk next door to Legends and get some more!

One both sides of the street…nothing but bars and great music!

Then head on down to Broadway and 2nd and hang a left and you have B.B. Kings Blues, Spaghetti Factory and The Wildhorse Saloon. Three more great places that we love to visit while in “Nash Vegas”, as many locals call it!

Listening to Carl Stuart at B. B. Kings is like listening to a little B. B. King himself! If I am not mistaken, Carl is a nephew of B. B.’s and he is there just about every weekend.

We went there on Friday night.

Saturday morning, while Mark slept in, Sheri and I headed to McDonalds for breakfast and some great “cousin” time! It was great to visit with her and catch up on family things. Texting and talking on the phone is okay…but NOTHING beats seeing your cousin in person and having a nice visit.

We went to The Wildhorse Saloon Saturday evening, breakfast Sunday morning at the hotel and then said our goodbyes and headed our separate ways.

It is a yearly tradition…and I wouldn’t take anything for it!

I love my cousin, Sheri, very much.

She has been more like a sister to me than a cousin. Although, when we were kids, we use to fight like cats and dogs. Merely child’s play more than anything. We have always had a very special bond.

We are close to the same age and we have lots in common. Sheri has always been there for me over the years. Someone to talk to about situations in my life…and I listen to her when she needs an ear as well.

There is something very special about “cousins”. I have been blessed to have many cousins on both sides of the family.

On my dad’s side…I have always been the closest to Brooke. (Or should I say, “Brookester”, as I affectionately call her.)  I have written about Brookester in a previous blog. She is absolutely incredible.

On my mother’s side, I am the closest to Sheri. She is an incredible, beautiful, hard working, loving and caring person. She has a really big heart and I love her for that. She loved my mom very much…and I will NEVER forget her for all the good things she did for my mom before she passed away.

I know the day is coming; it is just a fact of life, that all of our parents will be gone. It killed me to lose my mom and I dread the day when my dad is gone. But I know, and we all do, that day will come for ALL of us. I know better than anyone. I have over 30 years’ experience as a funeral director. I deal with death on a daily basis.

But I also know this one thing. I will ALWAYS have Brookester and Sheri for a long time to come, Lord willing.

Cousins are special people in our lives. I love mine. Just wish I could see them more often.

I love you, Sheri!!

Until next time….
