Kacey Musgraves: cool and refreshing

Kacey Musgraves beaverdamusa.comFor years, we’ve been subjected to over-production as studio giants in Nashville took us on a ProTools roller coaster ride through layers and layers of tricks, smoke and mirrors. Don’t get me wrong, we love the heavy hitters of country radio as much as anybody does. But let’s face it: does it really take a thousand signals to make a song sound good?

Nope, it doesn’t. Enter Kacey Musgraves, whose first major label release “Same Trailer Different Park” (Mercury) is honest, simple and brilliant. The music overtakes over-production. Major credit goes to Kacey and her co-producers Luke Laird and Shane McAnally for delivering a record like this.

Close your eyes and listen, and you can almost imagine the band sitting in your room, playing the songs just because they love music. This recording style goes hand-in-hand with Kacey’s tunes, all of which she co-wrote. They’re playful, poignant and politically incorrect when necessary. Kacey’s small-town characters are forelorn, hopeful, and (of course) medicated. They’re those relatives of ours we don’t claim until we need help getting our car out of the ditch.

Highlights, of course, include the first two singles, “Merry Go Round” and “Blowin’ Smoke.” We also love “Follow Your Arrow” and “Keep it to Yourself.” At 24, Kacey Musgraves is already an insightful writer and unique vocalist. Buy this record. You simply must possess it.

Kacey is on the road this summer, both on her own, and with some dude named Chesney. See her schedule here.
