“And Here, She’s Acting Happy”

music musings, beaverdamusa.comI saw an article shared by a friend today which indicated Clare Alden MacIntyre-Ross passed away earlier this month.

You might be wondering who Clara is or why she is noteworthy.  Maybe “something about her was familiar”, or you know her by where she lived (16 Parkside Lane) or maybe another name – Sue.  As in “…how are you Sue?”

Yes, Clara was the inspiration for Harry Chapin’s character named Sue in his classic tune “Taxi”.  The article explains how they met and then Harry pulled a taxi license and imagined what it would be like if he happened to pick up a passenger and it be her.

If you know me, you know that I am a Harry Chapin fan and have been for a while.  I put Harry probably at the top of my list of artists I wished I could have seen before he died at the very young age of 38.

The article leaves out one of my favorite things about the song “Taxi” – the song title “Sequel”.  Yes, Harry wrote a sequel to his classic “Taxi”.  It is the same tune, but is set several years later and updates the listener on what’s up with Harry and Sue.  Let’s just say they are in different places in their lives than where they were with that first taxi ride.

Do yourself a favor and go listen to “Taxi” and “Sequel” after reading the article (Clare Alden MacIntyre-Ross).

I wonder what it was like for her to go through life knowing that she was Sue every time she heard the song.  I doubt she pined for the money Harry made off “Taxi” since she had family money and besides, Harry gave most of his away anyway.  I would like to just imagine her pausing, listening, and recalling fondly those memories as folks around her wondered what she was smiling about…..

Rest in Peace Clare
