Your Opinion on the Shutdown? Sure We’re Listening

An Opinion on the Shutdown
Is like Facebook: We All Have One

Did you hear the Washington Redskins finally changed their name to make it less offensive?

They are now the “That City Close to Maryland Redskins”.

Ba-da-ba. Ching!

I wish I could take credit for that one, but I got the idea for it on Facebook while scrolling through posts about how bad we hate the government. In case you missed it, I wrote a humor blog about the shutdown. I wrote it in a hurry because I wanted to get it published before the crisis was over. Turns out I could’ve chiseled it in stone tablets, carried them up a mountaintop in the rain on the back of a 3-legged mule and still had time to spare.

It bothers me how much we hate the government. But what bothers me more is how we somehow cannot control ourselves to post our extreme political views on social media.

I wish Facebook came with a little jar of Vicks Vapor Rub that we could use when we felt a hateful rant coming on. Mom could rub it on our chests, insulate it with a bath cloth then tuck us in and kiss us goodnight.

In the morning, we would probably feel better. And we might just feel good enough to keep from posting whatever it was that was so important to us the night before.

But that’s not the way it works in our Everyone’s-Opinion-Matters society. Social media entitles us to disclose fully whatever is on our mind. We’re right. You’re wrong. And unfortunately, it’s a problem that Vick’s probably can’t fix.

They say the shutdown may end tonight. If you’re reading this, I urge you to put down your computer or phone and get out there and re-plan that visit the Smithsonian or a National Park. If you’re feeling too sickly to go, try some Vick’s Vapor Rub and maybe you’ll feel better in the morning.

Remember, an opinion is like, uh, Facebook. Everybody has one.
